Recovering Fundamentalist

The Bible belt is a funny place where we talk about Jesus in such a way as to get just enough Him to not need the whole of Him.
- Matt Chandler in his message, "Repentance for the Righteous" (Matt. 18)

Celebrating New Life

Yesterday was another great day! We had planned the pool party to celebrate 5 baptisms, but by days end, there 8! Thanks to all of you who were able to come out in support. Celebrating the new life that Jesus brings never gets old!

Social Media

Think social media is a passing fad? Check out this video. Wow! Lots of questions running through my head. What are the implications for churches wanting to effectively engage the culture with the gospel of Christ? How do we connect AND unplug from the “wired” lifestyle? What possibilities would Paul see? What cautions would Jesus have? Lots to ponder. . .

New Small Groups!

Hey, don’t forget that we have three (possibly even four) new small groups kicking off next month!
I’ll be leading one that is going to be hosted by Jason and Stacie Hollingsworth. I’m excited about Laurie and I both being in a group together again! We’ll be meeting on Thursday nights and the group is open to anyone who wants to jump in. Actual start date TBA. We’ve got a couple of ideas for the study that we’ll be sharing the first night. I appreciate the Hollingsworth’s opening their home!

A second group is forming for couples and families. We’ve had quite a few express an interest in plugging into this one, so there may be enough to start two groups! Tim and Tonya are heading this one up. If you’d like more information, be sure to attend the info meeting immediately following the service this Sunday in the Fellowship Center.

The third group is a men’s group that’s being organized by Merris Stambaugh and Spencer Johnson. It will meet in Merris’ home on Thursday nights. Start date and time TBA. All men are welcome. Please contact Merris or Spencer for more info.

New Life

Even though the AC was on the fritz and I felt like I was preaching in an oven, Sunday was a terrific day! Remember to pray for Austin, the young man I introduced at the end of the service who received Christ - PTL!

One of the other highlights of the day was getting to celebrate Lauren Wilson’s baptism. She had asked me if we could do the baptism in the river. Absolutely! It was a special afternoon and I’m very proud of her. It also brought back a lot of neat memories of all the other baptisms we’ve celebrated through the years at that particular spot on the river.

Gospel-Less Preaching

Have you ever wondered what the devil would do if he access to the pulpit of a church? Check out this terrific post on the Devil’s Sermon by Michael Spencer. Wow!

P.S. Here’s a great clip of Matt Chandler giving a Gospel response to a “devil’s sermon” he once heard: Jesus Wants the Rose!

Deer versus Dad

The deer have been feasting on most of the flowers and plants in my Dad’s yard, so he decided to take action. They are especially fond of his tasty hosta plants, so he enclosed the plants in a small make-shift pen made out of posts, wire and strips of cloth. The deer appear to be quite comfortable in their new corral, don’t you think?

Idolatry

Sunday’s message struck a nerve. But it was a good nerve. I’ve had quite a bit of feedback – thanks! I ran into someone from CC in the grocery store yesterday. It was so encouraging to hear her say that she and her husband had been really processing the message, and prayerfully thinking through the various ways it applied to their family. Amen!

This morning someone else sent me the link to this interesting CHART from the New York Times, detailing how Americans spend their time. Wow! Very enlightening, especially in light of Sunday’s message. Check out the religious activities line if you can find it :)

If you were out of town, or simply unable to make it this past Sunday, I’d like to encourage you to carve out some time this week to listen to the message. You can access it online at one of the following links: Audio | Outline | Podcast

Evangelical Myths

I thought this thought provoking post was worth passing along. (Although I would want to tweak number 15. Our teenagers think ours is ‘da man! And I do too because he keeps pointing our teens to THE Man!) What do you think of the list? Do any especially resonate with you? Why?

P.S. I’m currently reading the blog author’s book, Your Jesus Is Too Safe. I’m three chapters in, and so far, so good. Really good.
