Bowling Green

We arrived in Bowling Green at about 5:45 pm. It was about 470 miles from my Dad’s house in Salem. After rolling into town, we picked up the keys to Sarah's apartment at the front desk of one of the local motels which is also managed by the same properties that manage the apartments where Sarah will be living.  We drove over to the apartments, found the one assigned to Sarah, unlocked the door, walked in. . . and immediately thought. . . "Something's definitely not right here."  The living room was full of old furniture (she rented an unfurnished apartment). The hanging light in the kitchen was lying on the table with the junction box above it exposed. The exhaust vent was missing above the stove. There were several other things that indicated that this apartment was simply not ready to be rented.
So. . . I called Sarah's landlord and left a polite message explaining the situation.  His recording stated that in the case of an emergency, he could be reached by contacting the hotel where we picked up the keys.  So we drove back over to the hotel and explained the situation to the front desk clerk.  In turn, he got the manager on the phone for me, and after explaining everything to him, he said he would meet us in the lobby in 10 minutes.  When he arrived he was very apologetic and promised to get everything straightened out for us.  When he looked into the matter more closely, he realized that either the room had not been properly prepared for Sarah's arrival, or she had been mistakenly given the wrong room.

He then told us to go get something to eat and bring back the receipt, which he would take off Sarah's first month's rent. What a nice gesture! He assured us that while we were grabbing dinner, he would get everything worked out and ready for us.  We had a nice dinner in a restaurant in downtown Bowling Green, and when we returned, the manager took us to a different apartment that was “move-in-ready.”

He was genuinely sorry for the mix up and asked if Laurie and I were staying in Bowling Green.  When I told him that we had brought an air mattress and were planning on staying a couple of days to help Sarah get everying in order, he insisted that we accept a complimentary room in the hotel. What a really, really nice gesture!  So I am typing this in one of their rooms at this moment :)

We are very appreciative of his generous offer.  The apartment manager has lived in Bowling Green for 22 years.  He decided to live here because he thought it was a good place to raise his family.  He and his wife love it here. Obviously, that made all of us feel even better, especially Sarah.
